Tuesday Foreign Language/Sign Language Classes

SPANISH I
Grades 8 to 12
Semester Fee: $82 first, $83 second
Class Size: Min. 5, Max. 25
In learning Spanish, the focus will be on the four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. More of our in-class time will be focused on listening and speaking. Students must commit themselves to spend the time assigned listening to the tapes that I will send home with them. They cannot expect to speak a foreign language if they speak it only during one class period per week. This first year they will learn basic vocabulary, learn basic conversational skills, and to conjugate verbs in the present tense.
PREREQUISITE: Enough interest in learning a language, that you will diligently do your homework, especially doing the work with the assigned tapes. Listening is very important.
REQUIRED TEXT: Nuestros Amigos, Harcourt Brace, Javonovich. ($4 each as long as I can get them for that price. This cost is included in the Semester Fee.) ISBN 0-15-388435-5

SPANISH II
Grades 9 to 12
Semester Fee: $82 first, $83 second
This class is a continuation of Spanish I, still concentrating on listening and speaking but also learning grammar and correct spelling. Students will learn the present tense and also the present progressive. Students will also learn one method of talking about the future. Students will learn a lot of new vocabulary and will be able to talk about a larger variety of topics.
PREREQUISITE: Spanish I (at Hallstrom or another school.) plus a strong commitment to studying the homework and listening to assigned tapes.
REQUIRED TEXT: Nuestros Amigos, Harcourt Brace, Javonovich. ($4 each as long as I can get them for that price. This cost is included in the Semester Fee.) ISBN 0-15-388435-5. Those who studied Spanish I last year may use the book they bought for Spanish I. The cost of the book and copying are included in the Semester Fee.

SPANISH III
Grades 10 to 12
Semester Fee: $82 first, $83 second
This class is a continuation of Spanish II. This year we add the descriptive past tense (imperfect tense), the present subjunctive, future tense, and conditional tense. Students will be able to discuss a wider range of topics and include the past, present, and future. A larger variety of topics will be added to their vocabulary again this year.
PREREQUISITE: Spanish II (at Hallstrom or elsewhere.) plus a strong commitment to studying the homework and listening to assigned tapes.
REQUIRED TEXT: El Mundo de la Juventud, Harcourt Brace, Javonovich. ($4 as long as I can get them for that price. This cost and the cost for copying are include in the Semester Fee.)

SPANISH IV
Grades 11 to 12
Semester Fee: $82 first, $83 second
This class is a continuation of Spanish III. We’ll review what we studied in Spanish III and add the past perfect, future perfect, and conditional perfect tenses. Students will also learn past-future and conditional-progressive tenses. The last tense learned is past-subjective. And again, there will be vocabulary to help students talk about a wider range of topics.
PREREQUISITE: Spanish III (at Hallstrom or elsewhere.) plus a strong commitment to studying the homework and listening to assigned tapes.
REQUIRED TEXT: El Mundo de la Juventud, Harcourt Brace, Javonovich. ($4 as long as I can get them for that price. This cost and the cost for copying are include in the Semester Fee.)

LATIN I & II

Latin was the language of the Roman Empire and is one of a large family of languages to which English and nearly all European languages belong. About one-half of the words in modern English are borrowed from Latin at various stages of our history. The study of Latin makes the acquisition of other Romance languages much easier and has been shown to aid in verbal performance on college entrance exams.
PREREQUISITE: Students should have a good working knowledge of English grammar, including parts of speech and word usage. The student should plan on spending 30-45 minutes daily outside of class on homework. Homework will include grammar exercises, vocabulary drill, and translation.
REQUIRED TEXT: Latin I: Oxford Latin Course, Part I, Second Edition, ISBN 0195212037. Latin II: Oxford Latin Course, Part II, Second Edition, ISBN 0195212053. Both published by Balme, Maurice & James Morwood. Oxford University Press, 1996.
